Senpai Meaning in Karate

Senpai is the title for a senior student in a karate school. This person has more experience and a higher rank than the beginner. The senior student acts as a mentor and helps the newer members. They lead by example during the difficult drills in the training hall. A senior student helps a newcomer tie their belt before the class. This person provides a bridge between the teacher and the junior students. Helping others improves the senior student’s own understanding of the basic moves. They must maintain a high standard of behavior at all times. This role teaches responsibility and leadership skills to the advanced practitioner. Juniors look to this person for guidance during the various practice sessions. Respecting the seniority of others is a core part of the tradition.
