Tatami refers to the traditional matted floor area where karate practitioners train and compete during a formal session. These mats provide a cushioned surface that protects the athletes from injuries during falls or heavy footwork drills. In modern karate schools these mats are often made of high density foam rather than the original rice straw. The competition area has specific dimensions marked by different colored mats to show the boundaries of the fighting zone. Stepping outside of these boundaries during a match results in a penalty for the offending athlete in the ring. A student bows toward the mat before stepping onto the surface to show respect for the training space. A firm and non slip surface is necessary for maintaining balance during explosive kicks and deep stances. Keeping the mats clean ensures a safe and hygienic environment for every person in the martial arts school.
