Hangetsu Dachi is a wide karate stance that translates to the half moon or crescent moon position. The feet are turned inward with the knees squeezed together to create a strong and tensioned base for the body. This stance is unique because it focuses on internal strength and protection of the groin area during a fight. The weight is distributed evenly across both legs to provide a very solid foundation for slow powerful movements. It is the primary stance used in the crescent moon form to teach students about muscular control and breathing. A student moves forward in a half moon stance by stepping in a wide circular path on the mat. Strong inner thigh muscles are required to maintain the inward pressure necessary for this specific karate position. Solid footing prevents the practitioner from being pushed backward by a strong offensive strike from an attacker.
