Heiko Dachi is a basic karate stance where the feet are placed parallel to each other at shoulder width. The toes point straight forward and the knees are slightly relaxed to allow for quick and easy movement. This is a natural standing position often used during the transition between different exercises or as a ready stance. It provides a neutral base that does not favor one side of the body over the other side. Practitioners use this stance to focus on their breathing and to listen for instructions from the teacher in class. A student stands in a parallel stance while waiting for the command to begin a new training drill. Relaxing the muscles in this position helps the athlete stay calm and prepared for any sudden physical action. Equal weight distribution ensures that the body can move in any direction with the same amount of speed.
