Osae Uke is a functional karate technique that translates to the pressing block or the downward parry. The practitioner uses the palm of the hand to push an attacking limb down toward the ground. This block is very effective against straight punches or kicks aimed at the middle section of the body. It allows the defender to pin the arm of the opponent momentarily to create an opening for a strike. The movement stays close to the body to maintain a strong and compact defensive posture at all times. A student presses an incoming fist downward to clear a path for a fast reverse punch in class. Keeping the elbow tucked in provides more leverage when pushing against the strength of a larger person. This technique works best when the defender moves their body off the line of the attack.
