Koken Uke is an advanced karate technique that uses the top of the bent wrist as a block. The practitioner bends the hand downward to expose the wrist joint and strikes the limb of the attacker. This block is unique because it can also function as a strike to sensitive areas like the chin. It is often used in close range fighting where there is not enough space for full arm movements. The technique requires flexibility in the wrist to prevent injury while making contact with the opponent’s arm. An athlete blocks a high punch using the bent wrist during a traditional kata performance in class. Strengthening the wrist through repetitive motion is necessary for using this specific part of the hand safely. This block is very effective for hooking and pulling the arm of an opponent away.
