Tobikomi Zuki is a lunging karate punch that translates to the diving or jumping punch technique. The practitioner pushes off the back leg to propel the entire body forward toward the target. This movement increases the reach and the impact of the strike by using forward body momentum. It is a common offensive technique used to close the distance against an evasive or distant opponent. The arm extends fully as the front foot lands on the floor to maximize the power. An athlete lunges forward to land a quick jab during a competitive point sparring match. Maintaining a low center of gravity prevents the practitioner from falling over during the long leap. Keeping the chin tucked down protects the head while the body moves through the open space.
