Yoko Keage is a lateral karate technique known as the side rising kick or side snap swing. The practitioner stands sideways and swings the leg directly upward to the side of the body. This movement targets the armpit or the chin of an opponent who is standing very close. It focuses on the flexibility of the inner thigh and the strength of the outer hip muscles. The edge of the foot serves as the primary striking surface for this quick snapping motion. An athlete swings their leg sideways to hit a high target during a formal belt test. Strengthening the core muscles helps to keep the torso upright while the leg moves in a high arc. Fast retraction of the leg prevents the opponent from grabbing the limb after the strike.
