Ura Mawashi Geri Meaning in Karate

Ura Mawashi Geri is a sophisticated karate technique known as the hook kick or reverse roundhouse. The practitioner swings the leg in a circular path and strikes with the heel or the sole. The foot travels in the opposite direction of a standard roundhouse kick to catch the opponent off guard. It often targets the side of the head or the face by hooking around the defensive guard. This kick requires significant hip flexibility and excellent balance to execute with speed and high precision. An athlete scores a point by hooking their heel around a block during a tournament match. Pivoting the standing foot nearly 180 degrees allows the kicking leg to move freely and quickly. Accurate timing is essential to hit the target while the opponent is moving toward the strike.
