Irimi is a strategic karate movement that translates to the concept of entering or stepping inside. The practitioner moves directly toward the opponent to neutralize an attack before it reaches its full power. This technique requires courage and precise timing to close the distance during an active physical confrontation. By entering the space of the attacker the defender can disrupt their balance and limit their options. It is especially useful for setting up close range strikes like elbows or kneeing techniques. A student steps inside a wide swinging punch to deliver a short range counter strike. Keeping the chin down and the hands high protects the head while moving into the danger zone. Entering at a slight angle reduces the chance of walking directly into a secondary strike.
