Ashi Waza is a category of karate techniques that focuses on the use of the feet and legs. This classification includes every type of kick, sweep, and trip used to strike or unbalance an opponent. Practitioners spend many hours developing the flexibility and strength required to use their lower limbs effectively. These techniques allow a person to maintain a safe distance while still being able to attack. Mastery of the legs provides a significant reach advantage over an opponent who only uses their hands. An athlete performs a roundhouse kick to the ribs of a partner during a sparring drill. Strengthening the core muscles is essential for maintaining balance while standing on only one single leg. Fast leg movements make it difficult for an attacker to predict the next offensive move.
