Seiryu Meaning in Karate

Seiryu is a karate form that translates to the image of a green or blue dragon. This pattern focuses on the use of fluid and circular movements to redirect the force of an opponent. It emphasizes the soft aspect of martial arts by using open hand blocks and gentle body shifts. The form teaches the student how to flow from one technique to another without any hesitation. Practitioners learn to stay relaxed until the moment of impact to preserve their energy and increase speed. An athlete uses a circular palm block to push a punch aside during a training session. Rotating the torso helps the practitioner stay off the line of an attack while remaining very close. This form builds the mental calm needed to handle a stressful situation with grace and physical control.
