Naihanchi Nidan is the second level of the side to side form series in traditional karate. This pattern continues to use the horse riding stance but introduces more complex hand and arm techniques. It focuses on the coordination of the upper body with the lateral movement of the lower body. The form teaches the student how to defend against grabs and strikes coming from the side. Practitioners must maintain a consistent height to build the endurance of the thigh and calf muscles. An athlete performs a cross arm block and a back fist strike while moving sideways. Strengthening the outer hip muscles is necessary for performing the quick lateral shifts with speed and power. This form develops the physical discipline needed to maintain a strong defense while moving in a confined space.
