A floor exercise straddle jump is a jump with legs wide apart. The gymnast jumps off both feet and reaches for the high peak. While in the air the athlete splits the legs to the sides. The legs must reach a horizontal level to form a wide V. This jump requires the gymnast to have excellent hip flexibility and power. The athlete then snaps the legs back together for a safe landing. A gymnast performs a straddle jump during a fast dance sequence on mat. The athlete must push off the floor with a very strong force. Keeping the torso upright prevents the gymnast from falling forward or back. The gymnast must point the toes to create a long leg line. Judges check for a wide split and a high vertical jump. This move is a common requirement for many advanced gymnastics dance sets. Strong inner thigh muscles help the athlete lift the legs very fast. The gymnast must land with the feet together and the arms high. Proper arm movement helps the athlete stay balanced during the flight.
