Stance Meaning in Surfing

Stance refers to the specific way a surfer stands on the surfboard. This involves the distance between the feet and the angle of the toes. A proper stance provides the stability needed to stay upright on moving water. Most riders keep their feet about shoulder-width apart for the best balance. The knees remain bent to absorb bumps and help with shifting weight. A surfer maintains a low and centered stance during a long ocean ride. Weight shifts forward to gain speed and backward to slow the board down. One athlete stands firmly on the deck while gliding across a smooth wave. Mastering the stance is the first major step for every person learning to surf. A solid stance prevents falls and allows for much smoother transitions during turns.
