Fin Meaning in Surfing

A fin is a small rudder attached to the bottom of the surfboard. This device provides the directional stability and control needed for steering the board. Fins prevent the surfboard from sliding sideways across the face of the wave. Most boards use one, three, or four fins depending on the design. The shape and size of the fin affect how the board turns. A surfer pushes against the fins to change direction during a sharp turn. One rider feels the board grip the water as the fins engage. Fins are usually located near the tail of the board for maximum leverage. Modern fins can be removed or swapped to change the performance of boards. This small part is essential for maintaining a straight path in the water.
