Deck Meaning in Surfing

The deck refers to the entire top surface of the surfboard where riders stand. Surfers apply wax to this area to create a sticky grip for feet. A flat deck provides a stable platform for walking and moving on boards. Some designs feature a domed deck to keep the rails thin and fast. The feet must stay centered on the deck to maintain balance during rides. A surfer stands firmly on the deck while riding across a long wave. Soft foam decks protect beginners from bruises during falls in the shallow water. One rider waxest the deck of a new board before a morning session. Durability of the deck ensures the board lasts through many heavy ocean sessions. This surface acts as the interface between the athlete and the moving surfboard.
