A bonzer is a specialized surfboard design featuring five fins and deep channels. This unique setup uses a large center fin and four small side fins. The triangular side fins are angled to direct water flow into the tail. This design creates a lot of lift and speed on the wave face. It offers a very stable and powerful feel during high speed carving turns. The deep channels on the bottom help the board grip the water surface. A surfer drives through a long turn on a classic bonzer board. This configuration allows for smooth transitions between different sections of the moving swell. One rider feels the board accelerate out of a deep bottom turn. The bonzer remains a highly respected and functional design in surf history.
