Cross Step Meaning in Surfing

Cross stepping is the method longboarders use to move across the deck. The surfer walks by crossing one foot over the other in rhythm. This technique allows the rider to reach the nose of the surfboard. It maintains the balance and trim of the board during the movement. Proper cross stepping looks graceful and smooth like a dance on water. The surfer must keep their weight centered over the wooden board stringer. A surfer cross steps toward the front to prepare for a nose ride. Moving back and forth helps the rider control the speed of boards. One athlete walks effortlessly while gliding down a long and peeling wave. Mastering this footwork is a fundamental skill for every traditional longboard surfing enthusiast.
