A late takeoff occurs when a surfer catches a wave just as it breaks. The rider starts to stand up while the wave lip is pitching forward. This maneuver requires extremely fast paddling and a very quick and explosive pop up. The drop is usually much steeper and more vertical than a normal entry. A late takeoff often results in a free fall down the wave face. Surfers use this technique to get deep inside the barrel or hollow section. A surfer drops into a heavy wave just before the foam falls over. Timing must be perfect to avoid falling and going over the ocean falls. One rider successfully sticks a late takeoff on a massive and hollow swell. This move demonstrates a high level of commitment and expert ocean timing skills.
