Foil Meaning in Surfing

Foil describes the aerodynamic shape of a surfboard fin from front to back. This curve creates lift and reduces drag as water flows around the fin. Fins can be flat on one side or curved on both sides today. The shape of the foil determines how much drive and speed the board has. Hydrodynamic principles help the fin move efficiently through the moving ocean water surface. A surfer feels the board lift as the foil generates speed in surf. Different foils work better in certain types of waves and for specific moves. One athlete chooses a foiled fin to gain more control during fast turns. Understanding foil helps a surfer optimize the performance of their favorite surfing equipment.
