Polyester resin is the traditional liquid plastic used to glass most surfboards. This material is applied over a polyurethane foam core to create a shell. It is valued for its classic feel and ease of repair after damage. Polyester boards are usually heavier than epoxy but offer a very smooth ride. The resin hardens into a durable and shiny surface that resists salt water. A surfer waxes a classic polyester board before entering the cold ocean water. This material remains the standard choice for most custom and professional surfboards today. One athlete repairs a small crack in the polyester skin with new resin. The familiar smell and look of polyester define the traditional surfing experience.
