A batten is a thin and flexible strip used to reinforce the shape of a sail. In windsurfing, these strips are inserted into pockets to provide structural rigidity. They help the sail maintain its aerodynamic curve even in very high winds. Battens are typically made of fiberglass, carbon fiber, or other composite materials today.
