Leash Plug Meaning in Surfing

A leash plug is a small plastic device embedded into the deck of a surfboard. It serves as the secure attachment point for the cord that connects to the surfer. This circular plug is usually installed near the tail of the board today. A metal or plastic cross-pin inside the plug holds the nylon leash string. It is designed to withstand the heavy tension of a board being pulled by waves. A surfer loops their leash string around the pin before heading out to sea. Without a leash plug, there would be no safe way to keep the board attached. One shaper carefully installs a new leash plug into a foam surfboard core.
