Comboed is a situation where a surfer needs two new waves to win. This happens when the lead of an opponent is larger than one perfect score. The trailing surfer must replace both of their top scores to take the lead. It is a very difficult position to be in during the final minutes of a heat. Announcers often say a surfer is in a combination situation during the broadcast. A surfer realizes they are comboed after their rival scores a nine-point wave. Staying calm and hunting for two big waves is the only way to recover. One athlete breaks the combo by scoring a massive eight-point ride on a set. This term describes one of the most stressful moments in competitive ocean surfing.
