A step off occurs when a surfer moves from a jet ski to a wave. The rider stands on the back sled of the craft while it moves. As the jet ski matches the speed of the swell the surfer steps. This move eliminates the need for a tow rope or a paddle start. It provides a smooth entry into the wave without the jerk of a rope. A surfer steps off the ski onto a large and fast moving peak. This maneuver requires perfect timing between the driver and the athlete in water. One rider glides onto the face of a swell as the ski peels away. Step offs are a popular way to enter heavy waves at a slab break.
