A pass refers to a deep opening or channel in a coral reef. This gap allows the ocean swell to enter a lagoon or sheltered area. Passes are common in tropical locations like Tahiti or the Fiji islands today. They often create very powerful and hollow waves on the edges of the reef. The current in a pass can be very strong as the tide moves in or out. A surfer paddles through a deep pass to reach the lineup at a reef. This area is often the only safe way for boats to access the surfing spot. One athlete catches a wave that peels perfectly along the edge of a pass. Navigating a pass requires a good understanding of local tides and water flow.
