Corduroy Meaning in Surfing

Corduroy describes a series of long and organized swell lines on the sea. When viewed from a height, the ocean looks like the texture of fabric. This is a sign of a very clean and consistent groundswell arriving today. The waves are evenly spaced and stretch across the entire horizon line. Surfers love seeing corduroy because it means the surf will be perfect. A surfer looks at the corduroy lines from a cliff before paddling out. This pattern indicates that the swell has traveled a long distance to reach us. One rider counts the rows of corduroy moving toward the sandy beach shore. Corduroy lines represent one of the most beautiful sights for any ocean athlete.
