The catcher is the glove worn on the goalie’s non-stick hand. This piece of equipment is designed to catch and trap the puck. It looks similar to a large first base glove in baseball. Goalies use the catcher to stop high shots aimed at the net. A webbed pocket helps keep the puck inside the glove securely. Most goalies wear the catcher on their left hand during the game. The goalie flashed his catcher to snag a puck out of air. Closing the glove quickly prevents the puck from falling back on ice. This glove must be flexible enough to open and close easily. Padding on the back of the hand protects the goalie from slashes. High quality catchers help goalies make spectacular saves during a close game. Mastering the catcher is a vital skill for every young hockey goaltender.
