Half guard is a grappling position where one fighter traps one leg of the opponent. This position sits between a full guard and having the guard passed completely across. The bottom athlete uses their legs to pinch a single leg of the top fighter. This entanglement provides a base to launch sweeps or move back to full guard. The top fighter tries to free their trapped leg to move into mount. Both participants fight for an underhook to control the upper body of the adversary. Having an underhook allows the bottom person to roll the opponent onto their back. The top person uses their free leg and arms to maintain balance and pressure. Mastery of this position is essential for modern mixed martial arts ground fighting tactics. A fighter uses a deep half guard to slide underneath the weight of the opponent. Keeping the bottom knee shielded prevents the top person from crushing the chest area. This shield creates a physical gap that allows for easier hip movement and transitions. Strategic use of the legs ensures the trapped limb remains stuck for a long time.
