A lateral drop is a high-amplitude throw used in wrestling and mixed martial arts. The attacker uses the opponent’s forward pressure to launch them over the side of the body. This throw requires the attacker to step deep and sit back toward the floor. As they fall, they use their hips and arms to toss the adversary. The result is a spectacular arching movement that puts the opponent on their back. It is especially effective when an opponent is pushing hard against the cage or fence. The attacker often lands in a dominant top position like side control or mount. This move relies on timing and feel rather than raw lifting or pulling strength. Many greco-roman wrestlers use this technique to turn a defensive situation into an attack. A fighter executes a lateral drop after the opponent tries to drive them backward. Keeping a tight over-and-under grip ensures the opponent stays attached during the high throw. Arching the back at the peak of the move provides the necessary throwing clearance. This technique provides a quick way to reverse momentum and end up on top.
