Bias refers to the intentional weight imbalance built into one side of the bowl. This internal weight causes the bowl to curve during its path across the green. Manufacturers shape the bowl unevenly so it never travels in a straight line. This curve allows players to navigate around obstacles to reach the target. Players must account for this curve by aiming away from the center line. A bowler aims wide to the left to let the bias work. The bowl curves back toward the target as it loses its forward speed. Mastering the bias requires months of practice on different types of grass. Different brands of bowls feature varying degrees of bias for specific player needs.
