A hip heist is a quick movement used to escape from underneath an opponent. The wrestler sits out and then rapidly rotates their hips toward the mat surface. This motion creates a sudden separation between the two athletes during a ground scramble. The wrestler ends the move on their hands and knees facing the other person. It requires explosive power in the core and a very fast reaction time. One specific game example involves a bottom wrestler escaping a waist lock using this turn. The athlete throws their arm across their body to help generate the necessary rotation. This movement forces the top wrestler to lose their grip on the waist area. Successful execution results in the wrestler standing up or scoring a reversal for points. Speed is the most critical factor for making this escape work against strong opponents. The wrestler must keep their weight moving away from the attacker during the turn. Frequent practice of this drill builds the agility needed for high level defensive wrestling.
