A gap in American football refers to the space between the center and the guard on either side. These gaps sit closest to the football and matter on nearly every play. This term matters because many runs and blitzes target the A gap. Strong control there disrupts plays immediately. Teams attack the A gap with quick runs and inside pressure. Defenses send linemen or linebackers through it to collapse the pocket. For example, a running back dives through the A gap on third and short.
