Abandoned Match Meaning in Cricket

An abandoned match is a game that is stopped or never starts due to extreme weather, poor pitch conditions, or other safety concerns. If no play is possible and a minimum number of overs hasn’t been reached, the match is declared a ‘No Result,’ and teams usually share the points.

Example: The final game of the series was an abandoned match after heavy rain left the outfield completely flooded and unsafe for play. Pro-Tip: Umpires and groundstaff work for hours to dry the field before deciding on an abandoned match because they want to provide a result for the fans. In some tournaments, a ‘reserve day’ is scheduled so the game can be completed the following morning if the weather improves.
