An accidental offside happens when a player unintentionally interferes with the ball while standing in an illegal position. This usually occurs when the ball hits a teammate who is in front of the kicker. It also happens if a player accidentally runs into a teammate who is carrying the ball.
The referee only stops the game if the team in the wrong position gains an advantage. If the mistake does not help the offending team, the referee often lets play continue. This rule prevents teams from being punished for clumsy moments that do not impact the game. When the referee blows the whistle, they usually award a scrum to the opposing team.
For example, a ball might bounce off a teammate’s back who was looking away during a chaotic play. The referee will call for a scrum because that player was technically offside by being ahead. It keeps the game fair without being overly harsh on honest mistakes.
