Aero Bars Meaning in Cycling

Aero bars are special handlebars that extend forward from the center of a bicycle. They allow riders to tuck their elbows in close to their body. This position makes the cyclist much more narrow and streamlined. Cutting through the wind becomes easier with less body surface exposed. You will mostly see these in time trials or long distance races. Using them requires practice because steering feels very different. Also, your hands stay far away from the brake levers while tucked. This means you must plan ahead for corners or sudden stops. These bars can save a significant amount of energy over long distances. For example, a triathlete uses aero bars to maintain high speeds while resting their upper body weight on the pads. This setup helps them stay fresh for the running portion of the race later. The design mimics the shape of a bird or airplane to minimize drag. It is a simple tool for gaining free speed through physics.
