In basketball, an airball is a shot that misses everything. It is a field goal attempt that fails to hit the rim, the backboard, or the net, falling “into the air” or straight out of bounds without making any contact with the hoop assembly.
Why It Happens
An airball is generally considered the most embarrassing miss in the sport because it indicates a complete lack of accuracy. It typically occurs due to:
- Poor Distance Control: The player shoots with too much or too little power.
- Physical Pressure: A defender may be closely guarding the shooter, forcing them to alter their shot mid-air.
- Fatigue: When a player’s legs are tired, they often lack the “lift” needed to get the ball to the rim.
The Consequences
When a shot results in an airball, the game continues based on where the ball goes:
- In-Bounds: If the ball stays on the court, any player can grab it. However, the shooter usually cannot be the first person to touch it unless it hits another player first (otherwise, it is a “self-pass” violation).
- Out-of-Bounds: If the ball flies past the baseline without being touched, the opposing team is awarded possession.
The “Airball” Chant
In competitive environments, especially college basketball, fans often mock the opposing player who threw the airball by chanting “Air-ball! Air-ball!” every time that player touches the ball for the remainder of the game. Despite the social stigma, even the greatest professional players in history have thrown the occasional airball. It is simply part of the learning curve for any beginner.
