Alcatraz Meaning in Billiards

Alcatraz is a slang term for a ball that is completely trapped by other balls. Like the famous prison, the ball has no clear escape route to any of the six pockets. This usually happens in the middle of a messy cluster or near a crowded rail on the table. You must often hit another ball first to move the Alcatraz ball into a better position. Dealing with these trapped balls is a major part of advanced strategy and pattern play. Skilled players look for ways to break these clusters early to simplify the rest of their turn.

For example, the seven ball is in Alcatraz, surrounded by four stripes and the black eight ball. The player must cannon the cue ball into the group to set the seven ball free. Learning to identify and solve these table puzzles is what makes a great player. It requires a mix of power, touch, and creative thinking.
