Aloft Meaning in Sailing

Aloft refers to any position or action taking place high up in the rigging. This term describes work done on the mast, sails, or the supporting wires. Sailors go aloft to inspect equipment or to fix broken parts during a voyage. A crew member climbs the mast to untangle a rope caught in a pulley. This task requires a safety harness and a chair to prevent falling to the deck. High winds make working aloft much more difficult and dangerous for the sailing team.
