Angle Tackle Meaning in American Football

An angle tackle describes a tackle made by approaching the ball carrier from the side. Defenders use this method instead of attacking straight ahead. This term matters because it cuts off running lanes. Proper angles reduce missed tackles. Teams teach defenders to aim ahead of the runner. They close space and force the player toward the sideline or help. Also, angle tackles reduce injury risk. For example, a safety runs across the field and meets the runner at an angle. The runner goes down before reaching the sideline.
