Ankle Sprain Meaning in Football

An ankle sprain happens when the foot twists beyond its normal range. Ligaments on the outside of the ankle stretch or tear during play. This common injury occurs when stepping on uneven turf or another surface. Swelling and bruising make walking difficult for the athlete for several days. Icing the area helps control the initial inflammatory response of the body. Players often wear protective tape to stabilize the joint during future games. Moving the foot in circles helps restore the range of motion slowly. A midfielder rolls the foot over while dribbling past a tough opponent. Balance boards help the player regain control and stability in the joint. Strengthening the lower leg muscles prevents the ankle from turning over easily. Most minor sprains heal within two weeks with proper care and rest. Severe tears may require more time and professional physical therapy sessions daily. High-top shoes or bracing provide extra support for weak ankle joints.
