Anti-fouling is a specialized paint applied to the underwater section of a boat hull. This coating contains chemicals that prevent barnacles, weeds, and algae from growing on the surface. A clean hull moves through the water much faster than one covered in sea life. A boat owner applies a fresh layer of anti-fouling paint before the spring season. This protection reduces the fuel needed to move the boat at high speeds over time. Without this paint, the rough surface of the hull would cause significant drag in water. Maintaining a smooth bottom surface prevents damage to the fiberglass or metal structure of the vessel. Regular cleaning and painting keep the boat efficient and ready for long ocean trips.
