Ao Meaning in Karate

Ao is the Japanese word for blue and identifies the second competitor in a match. One athlete wears a blue belt or a blue tag for clear visual identification. This system allows the judges to award points to the correct person very quickly. The person designated as blue usually stands on the left side of the referee. Using colors prevents the need to remember many different names during a busy tournament. A judge points a blue flag toward the ground to signal a penalty. Identifying with a specific color helps the athlete stay focused on their own performance. Clear labels ensure that the scoring process remains fair for both people.
