The apex is the front-most ball in a triangular or diamond-shaped rack. It is the single ball that sits directly on the foot spot to start a game. When you perform the opening break, the cue ball usually strikes this ball first to scatter the others. If the apex ball is not touching the balls behind it, the rack will not spread effectively. Proper placement of this ball is essential for a fair and powerful beginning to any frame. For example, a player makes sure the one ball is the apex of the rack for a game of nine-ball. They align it perfectly on the spot so the break results in a wide and even spread. It is the anchor point for the entire set of balls before the game begins. Knowing the apex helps you set up a professional rack every time.
