Ashi-Guruma describes a leg wheel throw that flips an opponent over a guided leg. The attacker places one leg across the shins or knees of the standing defender. This leg acts as a stationary axle while the attacker pulls the opponent forward. The defender’s momentum carries their body over the extended leg and onto the mat. This throw requires precise timing to catch the opponent during a forward step. A judoka earns a full point by throwing the opponent flat on their back. Keeping a straight leg prevents the defender from stepping over the tripping point easily. This technique uses the opponent’s own weight to complete the large circular rotation.
