An assist in football describes the contribution by a player that directly leads to a teammate scoring a goal, such as a pass, a cross, or any action that sets up the goal scorer; while not part of the official Laws of the Game, assists are commonly tracked in statistics and give insight into players’ roles in creating scoring chances, and different competitions may vary in how they credit assists, including situations where rebounds or deflections still count toward the assisting player.
