Ayumi Ashi Meaning in Karate

Ayumi Ashi is a basic karate footwork technique known as the natural stepping or walking movement. The practitioner moves forward by swinging the back leg past the front leg in a normal stride. This type of movement is the most common way to cover long distances on the training mat. It requires the student to maintain a consistent height to avoid bobbing up and down while moving. The feet should glide close to the floor to ensure that balance is never fully lost. A student walks forward while performing a series of middle punches across the large training hall. Keeping the hips level during the step provides a stable platform for delivering a powerful strike. Natural stepping allows for a rhythmic and efficient way to approach an opponent in battle.
