Back of the Grid Meaning in Formula 1

Back of the grid refers to the final starting positions. Drivers there begin near the rear. Poor qualifying or penalties cause this placement. Overtaking becomes necessary to score points. For example, an engine penalty may drop a driver to last. He must pass many cars to recover.

Traffic increases the challenge early on. Strategy becomes aggressive from this position. Starting at the back makes the race harder.
