A back press is the stationary balance phase before a backward diving takeoff. The diver stands on the end of the board with their heels over water. They often raise their arms to shoulder height to find a steady center. This moment of stillness is required by rules before the actual dive begins. The athlete must demonstrate complete control without any extra movement or foot wobbles. A solid press allows the diver to utilize the springboard’s maximum upward lift. One example of this is the starting stance for a back somersault. Judges may deduct points if the diver’s feet move before the arm swing. The athlete keeps their core tight to prevent falling backward too early. Proper weight distribution on the toes provides the necessary power for the jump. This phase sets the rhythm for the entire execution of the maneuver.
